Rimuru Playing Cards Review – Four suits, four concepts

Slime playing cards front

[QUICK VERDICT]

This is the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime playing cards set by Ensky. It is a standard 54-card deck, not a TCG product.
What makes it interesting is that each suit has its own art concept, and several illustrations look new.
It works best as a display piece for Tensura fans who like seeing the cast in different outfits.

[WHAT’S IN THE BOX]

The box shows Rimuru on the throne on the front. The back lists the contents: 54 playing cards, 2 spare cards, and a paper card case.
The case is paper, not plastic. The copyright block lists Ensky and Kodansha, 2021, made in China, for sale in Japan only.
The box itself is sturdy enough to stand on a shelf, and the front art works like a small poster.

[SUIT BY SUIT]

  • Spades use a black-and-gold formal concept. Rimuru, Benimaru, Shuna, Shion and the other executives wear black suits with gold trim. It is a sharp contrast to their usual battle outfits.
  • Hearts use a band concept. Rimuru on vocals and guitar, Benimaru on guitar, Shuna on drums, Souei on bass, Shion on keyboard. These illustrations do not appear in the main anime, so they stand out when you flip through the deck.
  • Diamonds use an orange background with a mix of battle and outing outfits. Clubs use a purple background with a mix of daily life and action scenes. Each suit has its own background color, so the four groups are easy to tell apart when laid out.

[WHAT SURPRISED ME]

The variety per suit was the best part. There are quite a few illustrations I had not seen before, and the deck is fun to flip through because the fashion and poses change completely by suit. The Hearts band concept especially feels unique to this product. Seeing the characters in outfits you never see in the show gives the set its own charm.

[WHO IT’S FOR]

Tensura collectors who enjoy character goods as display items. People who like comparing art concepts across a full set.

[WHO IT’S NOT FOR]

Players looking for a TCG deck. These cards have no game text and cannot be used in card games.
