Mushoku Tensei Playing Cards Review – Only J/Q/K Illustrated, Still Decent

Quick Verdict

Mushoku Tensei playing cards (無職転生 ~異世界行ったら本気だす~): a 54-card trump deck — actual playing cards, not trading cards — from Algernon Product at 1,320 yen tax included. Only the J, Q, and K cards carry character illustrations — but it’s better than that sounds. Each suit’s characters come with their names printed, in varied expressions and poses, with their signature weapons crossed in X shapes behind them. For the price, this is a decent deck, and the cheap character decks that recycle one illustration across every suit should take notes.

Only J, Q, and K?

Yes — the illustrations live on the face cards, a different character for each one. Every suit gets its own cast with the character’s name printed alongside, in varied poses and expressions, so no two feel like the same art shifted around. The main trio — Roxy, Rudeus, Eris — are all here, including Eris’s cat pose that steals the show. I laid out all 19 distinct faces for the photos: 12 court cards, 2 jokers, 4 aces, and the back. The border design stays consistent across the deck: ornate red borders for hearts and diamonds, black for spades and clubs, with swirl motifs in the corners.

What About the Number Cards and Aces?

The entire A-through-10 range shares a single design: a large suit pip with decorative borders and corner indices, uniform across all four suits. Two Jokers are included, each with a different character illustration, and the card back is black with a gold 無職転生 logo and subtle gold ornamentation beneath it. The full contents: 52 cards plus 2 Jokers, 54 total.

What’s Special About the Backgrounds?

Each character’s main weapon is drawn crossed in an X behind them — the backgrounds aren’t filler gradients or blank space. Combined with the per-suit character arrangement, the deck shows more thought than its price suggests. It’s a small touch, but it separates this deck from the laziest licensed cards, the ones that just paste a face onto a plain field.

The Box

The front shows Rudeus, Eris, and Roxy under the 無職転生 PLAYING CARDS title against a gold ornate backdrop. The back previews four card thumbnails (Heart Jack, Club 3, Spade Jack, Diamond Jack) on a brown-and-gold ornate pattern that echoes the card borders, alongside the 54-card contents, the maker (株式会社アルジャーノンプロダクト, Algernon Product, Tokyo), the 1,320 yen tax-included price, and the ©理不尽な孫の手/MFブックス/「無職転生Ⅱ」製作委員会 notice, plus a KADOKAWA hologram sticker (45720124).

Worth Buying?

At 1,320 yen (around 15,000 won), this is fair value. Plenty of cheap character playing cards ship with blank design effort — nothing drawn at all, or the same illustration recycled across every suit. This deck avoids both traps well enough to recommend. If you like Mushoku Tensei, it’s worth considering at least once. My favorite detail: Eris’s cat pose made the cut, and it’s genuinely charming. And for a deck you’ll actually shuffle, the standard pips on the number cards keep it fully playable.

A Note on Cheap Anime Decks

Honestly, the budget playing cards that recycle illustrations shamelessly should reflect a little. There are seriously bad ones out there — even for famous anime, which makes it worse. I own the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train playing cards — illustrations only on the face cards, the same illustration repeated identically across all four suits. It’s the textbook case of what I’m talking about. Put the two decks side by side and the difference is obvious: one did the work, the other didn’t. A deck like this proves the format can be done right at a low price: distinct characters per suit, named, posed differently, with backgrounds that actually depict something. That’s the baseline more licensed decks should clear.
