ONE PIECE Clockwork Island Lami Card Set (2001) Review – Five Cards Backed by the Crew’s Own Wanted Posters

Quick Verdict

A five-card laminated set sold with the second One Piece film in 2001, and it still arrives as a display piece: the cards come pinned into a printed starburst board, not loose in a pack. The quiet detail is in the backgrounds — each card is illustrated over a collage of the crew’s wanted posters, and the big readable fragments usually belong to the other members. Behind Luffy sits Zoro’s poster. Behind Nami, Sanji’s.

What exactly is this set?

It is the Straw Hat Pirates Lami Card Set, made by Movic for ONE PIECE: Clockwork Island Adventure, the second theatrical film, released in 2001. The lineup is the whole crew as it stood that year — Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji, five members and nobody else. Each card measures about 95 × 65 mm and is laminated on both sides. As sold, the five cards sit in die-cut windows on a cream textured board, held by small pins at the corners, with a compass-like starburst printed in the middle, the film’s logo at the top and the copyright line at the bottom. The board is not packaging you throw away — it is the display. Popped out of their windows, the cards are ordinary small prints; back in the board, the set becomes a single framed piece.

Why is someone else’s wanted poster behind each character?

Because the background of every card is one shared collage of all five wanted posters, cut up and layered. Stand in front of Luffy and you can read “RORO—” and the start of “20,0—” over his shoulder: that is Zoro’s poster. Nami’s card shows “—NJI” from Sanji’s poster and a corner of Luffy’s. Zoro leans in front of Usopp’s, with “5,00—” visible beside his head. The same five posters repeat across all five cards in different crops, so every character ends up framed by a mix of the whole crew’s bounties — and the largest readable fragments are, more often than not, somebody else’s. It is a neat trick for a crew that only had five members to begin with.

How do the five cards look up close?

Luffy. Arms crossed, red vest, grinning straight at the camera — the standard early-series Luffy, with Zoro’s poster torn across the wall behind him.

Zoro. Crouched low over his swords in a white shirt and green haramaki, glaring sideways. The gloss of the laminate catches hardest on this one.

Nami. Staff in both hands, Log Pose on her wrist, checked top with a heart at the chest. The lower half of her card fades into a gold sheen where the light hits the coating.

Sanji. Black suit, blue striped shirt, cigarette in hand — the only card where smoke drifts across the artwork itself.

Usopp. Mid-aim with his slingshot, goggles pushed up on his bandana, the most animated expression of the five.

What does the lamination actually do?

These are paper-era goods, and paper from 2001 normally curls, yellows or fades. Most card goods of the era were bare paper or thinly coated at best; a full two-sided seal like this was the exception, and it was the first time I had seen lamination done this properly on a card set. The laminate is a full seal on both faces with a small clear margin around the print, and it is why this set can sit flat and glossy twenty-five years later. Out of the board, the cards are stiff little prints that do not bend like ordinary card stock. In the board, they read less like cards and more like a framed poster that happens to come apart into five pieces.
