Blazer, ribbon bow, pleated skirt, beret: read the ingredient list of Umi Ryuuzaki’s card and it sounds like a school uniform. Read the card itself — the 8 of Diamonds of the CLAMP exhibition deck — and it never looks like one. The difference is not the pieces. It is their lengths.
Umi is the Magic Knight of water in Magic Knight Rayearth, partnered with the Mashin Ceres: proud, blunt, first to say what the other two are thinking, and a fencer — which shows in how she is drawn, all straight lines and raised chin. This look is her at her most composed: navy and teal, not a frill out of place.

What Is This Look?

A small white beret. Below it, a navy cropped blazer with gold buttons, worn open over a white blouse tied with a teal-green ribbon bow at the collar.
The skirt is the colour of the whole outfit: teal, fully pleated, falling below the knee in soft folds — on the card it flows almost like water, which for this character is unlikely to be an accident.
Black tights close the bottom half. The card shows no shoes, so the footwear is a proposal: black tassel loafers to keep the outfit’s formal line, white sneakers when it should read younger and lighter.
The Point
The point is that a uniform composition stops reading as a uniform the moment every length turns adult. The blazer is cropped, ending at the waist instead of the hip. The skirt is a midi, its pleats long and heavy rather than short and bouncy. Nothing is oversized, nothing is mini, and so the same four ingredients that make a school uniform — blazer, bow, pleats, neat shoes — assemble into an outfit a grown woman wears on purpose.
Shorten the skirt by twenty centimetres and the look collapses back into costume. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth stealing: with classic pieces, proportion is the only costume switch there is.
The colours do the character work. Teal is Umi’s element, water, and it takes the largest surface in the outfit, the skirt. The navy blazer is the discipline over it — the fencer’s posture, the proud streak. Even the beret is doing quiet duty: it is the one soft shape in a look built from straight lines.
Styling Tips

- Keep the blazer cropped. A standard-length blazer over pleats is a uniform silhouette, full stop.
- The skirt stays below the knee. The midi length is not a detail of this look; it is the look.
- One ribbon only. The bow at the collar is the single decoration the outfit allows itself.
- Tassel loafers hold the formal line. Sneakers are a deliberate step down in formality, not an equal swap.
- The beret is optional. The composition survives without it; the card’s softness does not.
- Keep the palette at two colours plus black and white. A third colour breaks the water-and-discipline balance the outfit is built on.
Facts and How to Check
- Character: Umi Ryuuzaki (龍咲 海), from Magic Knight Rayearth (魔法騎士レイアース) by CLAMP — the Magic Knight of water, partnered with the Mashin Ceres. In the Korean dub she is named Marine Blue.
- Card: 8 of Diamonds, from the foil playing-card set sold at the CLAMP Exhibition (CLAMP’s 35th anniversary exhibition). All 54 cards carry different illustrations.
- Card items: white beret, navy cropped blazer, white blouse with teal ribbon bow, teal pleated skirt, black tights.
- The card shows no footwear; the loafers and sneakers are proposals.
- The flat-lay and outfit-board images are AI-generated. The card photo is the real item.
